Before you blame IBS, it's worth ruling out SIBO — small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The symptoms overlap almost perfectly. Score yourself on the calculator below and see if SIBO might be your problem.

When you have IBS it's really tricky to get a handle on what is causing your symptoms. Before you just blame IBS it's important to rule out other gut conditions such as SIBO.

SIBO is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and the symptoms you have when you have SIBO are very similar to IBS. Do my gut calculator below and see if SIBO may be your problem.

How the calculator works

For each symptom below, score yourself the number next to it and total your score up. If you get a score of 20 it's possible that you have SIBO. If you get a score of 25 it's likely — and if you're a yes to every symptom with a 5 next to it, it's probably a yes as well.

The SIBO gut calculator

  • You get bloated within 30 minutes of eating — 1
  • You have alternating constipation and diarrhoea — 5
  • You feel better when you take antibiotics — 5
  • You have low B12 — 1
  • Your iron is low — 1
  • You have had symptoms since a bout of gastroenteritis — 5
  • You burp a lot — 1
  • You get reflux at least twice a week — 1
  • You have rosacea — 5
  • There is joint pain — 1
  • You are tired — 1
  • You get gut pain at least twice per week — 1

  • You have a fatty liver — 1
  • You have gallstones — 1
  • You've been diagnosed with diabetes — 1
  • You have restless legs syndrome — 1
  • You have hypothyroidism — 1

What to do with your score

Testing with a company such as SIBO Test will confirm that SIBO is problematic, and I do have gut protocols that help people to overcome SIBO.

If you'd like to learn about the protocols, as well as other gut conditions such as food sensitivities, fructose malabsorption, gut dysbiosis, parasites, and histamine and salicylate sensitivities, come along to my Good Gut Workshop being held in August 2026. It's being held live over Zoom so you can come no matter where you live — five one-hour sessions.

If you're interested in getting onto the waitlist, put your name and email address into the box below.
